Linking Communities: Chanting the Night Away
The Baltimore Hebrew Congregation is proud to have Kirtan Rabbi Rabbi Andrew Hahn bring a night of Kirtan singing and chanting to their community, and is inviting the Charm City Yoga community to join in and try something new. Rabbi Hahn describes Kirtan as “a form of chant developed in India to heighten participation, communal feeling and ecstatic communion with the divine. Its usual, distinguishing feature is a formula of singing based on call-and-response. The chant facilitator offers something and then the participants return the favor.”
As an officer for the BHC, our very own Edith Brotman has made it her mission to build bridges between their community and ours. Like yoga, Kirtan is another way to find spiritual enlightenment. Edith says it’s akin to pranayama. During a Kirtan experience, you can feel the vibrations of the chanting and song work through your nasal passages and down your spine. These vibrations change the brainwaves, creating space and release allowing for connection on a higher level.
“When I do it, I feel a tremendous sense of joy and peace,” Edith says.
This event is on December 17th at 7pm at 7401 Park Heights Avenue, Baltimore, MD 21208. Everyone is invited, regardless of religious background. For anyone looking for a spiritual experience, Kirtan is a welcome space to connect to something higher than yourself.
